This A. L.Bancroft Co. view shows this former Spanish Colonial town at a time of rapid expansion. New surveys had extended the initial plan, trees were aggressively planted and the railroad had come to town in 1864, connecting it to San Francisco, forty-seven miles away. While leisure time activities are characterized by the the baseball game shown in the foreground, civic and commercial pursuits are evident by the presence of the courthouse, churches and business districts to the left.
