Established in 1555 as a border fortress town between France and the Low Countries, Phillippeville had an almost symmetrical pentagonal plan. Our reproduction shows the city after its ramparts, bastions and moats had been extended by the famous French military engineer, Sebastien Le Prestre de Vauban.
